News 1: Apple iOS14 bolsters search capability
Google faces an anti-trust process by the U.S. Department of Justice. This investigation includes the multi-billion ($8–12 billion) deal between Apple and Google, running Google search engine as a default option. As a result, Apple is developing its own search engine, also proven by the new operating system, iOS14. When users type queries from their home screens, results link directly to websites, without another search-engine in between. Opinion for B2B: Evidence is mounting up, that Apple is working on developing its own search engine. Just in case! A sign of it: hiring of John Giannandrea, Google head of search, more than two years ago. Apple is rigorous on data collection that makes a search better — how will they go with it?
Exciting times ahead! Apple to turn into a Google rival.
News 2: Search ads without selling data, DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo is an US alternative to Google. Offensive on how ads work. They are not based on user profiles (IP, history), but simply on what is searched — „holidays at the North Sea“ only shows ads for hotels at the North Sea. Among the latest features is an anonymous route planner. The private mobile browser for Android and IOS even reports trackers that spy on users while searching. Opinion for B2B: Some room for improvement regarding search results, but by setting country context to regional, results gets more accurate. Filter options (family filter, time period) make the search all the more practical. Google still has the better search results so far, but DuckDuckGo comes very close and has steadily improved. And they fight for transparency on how data collection works.
By now, definitely a satisfying Google alternative!
News 3: QWANT — The French Player
For Paris-based Qwant, search results run through Bing and are supplemented by its own web crawler. Qwant doesn’t analyse geolocation, no data collection or cookie tracking. Two specials: ‚kids version‘ and music. Qwant junior is for children aged 6–13 years, offering age-appropriate content and navi. Qwant music searches for artists, their bio, social feeds, related news articles and videos. Linking to music stream on YouTube, Spotify, Deezer or Apple Music. Axel Springer is a major investor. Opinion for B2B: With the “panorama search” Qwant categorizes results in tabs (pictures, videos, shopping, etc.) just like Google, no real differentiation. Just the music search is different, rich of content.
Since 2011, too few differences, hence no breakthroughs.
