News 1: Conscious consumerism gets 125 millions

Aspiration is a US challenger bank, founded in 2013 and based on a social/sustainability proposition. It praises conscious consumerism in a time of social and economic reflection. But also as a challenger bank lower account fees. It gets its first large financing at a high level of 135 million USD. Opinion: Well, the crisis will show new trends, new “aspirations” of consumption. Still difficult to finally define the aspirations, just too early. Still. LA-based VC Alpha Edsiion decided to put their highest finance round ever, for Aspiration. B2B Takeout: Conscious consumerism is a deep trend in consumption, restricted to small urban groups. Will it go to the masses?

News 2: A ceiling sensor measures workplace

VergeSense offers a box with sensors that is fixed on the ceiling of workplace and conference rooms. It measures movement, gathers data and stresses potential of optimisation. Less workplace surface, less conference rooms, distance between employees. Y Combinator invests a first 9 million USD in VergeSense. Opinion: A clever set-up of people counting, reading form of rooms, count objects left behind and movement tracking. The “geography” of workplace has a huge influence on morale, work performance and now safety. VergeSense, a great discovery. B2B Takeout: Obviously, the re-organisation of the workspace will be every company’s priority and a new market. With VergeSense, data-driven and not only observation.

News 3: Hire and pay remote workers with Deel

Founded 1,5 years ago, Deel gets a financing of 14m USD from Andreessen Horowitz (18m in total) for a very topical service: hire and pay remote workers. The offer: contracts, compliance, payment, onboarding in a single platform for 150 countries. Opinion: The historical venture capital Andreessen Horowitz and their partners have been outspoken during the crisis and shown a more reality-driven attitude to tech, start-up and investment. Intellectually interesting to follow them. B2B Takeout: Remote workers is a challenge for HR — hiring, onboarding but also if remote then why not work with international workforce — hence the contract and compliance issue. Smart offer at the right time (letsdeel.com).
