Anthropic, the main contender

Anthropic is the main contender to OpenAI. Former employees founded it in 2021, with an ambition to do exactly the same as OpenAI, but “more safely”. They gathered $1,3 billion (300m from Google) for that purpose. And then comes Claude, the response to ChatGPT. Opinion: If they’re gonna be a large market, if they’re gonna be a new habit of chatting with a machine, there must be competition to OpenAI, and there is. Anthropic. They add more ‘regulation’ into the AI itself, with ‘constitutional AI’. Banning all negative aspects in the machine itself and beyond the ‘reinforcement learning’ used by all.

The debate is on: a constitution into AI.

Bedrock is the brand new GenAI by Amazon

Amazon Web Services just launched Amazon Bedrock, an hybrid API. In fact, AWS gathers GenAI from themselves (Titan), from Anthropic with Claude, from Stability AI and from smaller actor AI21 Labs. It will comprehensively cover all generative use cases. Opinion: Everyone was wondering, how would AWS react to the big GenAI wave. A very pragmatic approach: gather a best-of and adding services to what they themselves cannot catch up with. All of it among the AWS leading cloud.

UK based but with 140.000 contributors, Stability AI

Stability AI is an open source ‘initiative’ offering Generative AI models. Most famous one is Stable Diffusion for image generation. DreamStudio for more complicated image, Clipdrop (acquired) for image dropping, but also in biomedicine with MedARC or OpenBioML. New large language model StableLM is out and competes with GPT (or even overpasses it). Opinion: Stability AI has partnered with Amazon for supercomputer resources. All models are the basis for separate applications like Lensa app, that was hyped in the summer 2022. Stability AI is the ‘real open AI’ project on the table, OpenAI has turned into a profit company with OpenAI API in 2021.
