News 1: Whatsapp, again with in-chat shopping
Facebook has announced the integration of shopping within the Whatsapp chat for small and mid-sized businesses. Only for clients that use “Whatsapp for business”. Shopping will be built on the Facebook company shop platform — Facebook Shop. Facebook will also offer hosting to the businesses in Whatsapp For Business. A taboo so far. Opinion for B2B: And again Facebook talks in a -very short- blog about in-chat shopping. With semi launches in Brazil and India. But never really a strong launch. Still, it makes sense for Whatsapp to offer a simple check-out for the merchants on the platform. A copy of what WeChat has been doing for years. But Facebook is very, very careful with commerce and Whatsapp. Afraid of losing the massive audience.
Do you believe In-Chat shopping will come?
News 2: Secret Crush, now in Europe
Another taboo… could Facebook turn into being a dating app. Yes, it does with an opt-in for users to build a dedicated dating profile. Now available in whole of Europe. Facebook Dating was already available in 20 countries — and claims “1.5 billion matches”. Opinion for B2B: Facebook Dating includes very well-thought features like Stories, Virtual Date (over video) and the famous “Secret Crush” — a crush with someone you’re bound to on FB already. Most of dating app users are over 40 — and it now corresponds to the core of the Facebook users in Europe. A late, but interesting move from Facebook.
Any “Secret Crush” — breaking a taboo as well?
News 3: AI translation — without English
Facebook has one of the best AI research & development team s— Facebook AI Research — based in Menlo Park and Paris. The team has cracked a “taboo”, a “must” in machine learning translation: always translate to English as a reference and re-translate. Not necessary any longer, the so-called “M2M-100 is the first multilingual machine translation model that can translate between any pair of 100 languages without relying on English data”. Opinion for B2B: Facebook is not known for AI and this is a misconception . The research team belongs to the top teams in the world. AI research often compete on language translation as a mark of progress. Now Facebook leads the pack with the new model of Machine Translation. And remember AI is the basis of the extraordinary Facebook ad machine.
No English back translations, at last!
